Day 6 (6/7): Yakima, WA; 80 miles

Team Photos

Woke up nice and early today to a delicious hot breakfast provided by the Double K folks. My uniform managed to stay wet overnight but luckily they had a fire going at the main lodged which dried everything off while we ate. We hit the road for what proved to be an awesome, awesome ride through some picturesque canyon passes. The morning was freezing cold which had us in our full gear again, but before long the sun came out and we were able to strip down to just the jersey and shorts for the first time (time to get that sweet cycling tan!)

Cruised at a nice leisurely pace with a bunch of different guys throughout the day, taking sweet pics of the canyon. Ezra provided one of his five star crew chief lunches before the last few miles into town, where we passed some fruit-packing industry (love them Washington apples!) Lodging was at a local high school (where Todd’s uncle is principal, go Eisenhower Cadets!) where we soon discovered that school was still in session! Its pretty awes walking through high school halls in spandex.

We were staying in the “yoga room” which was on the second floor of the school’s massive gym, and just as we were arriving the girls volley ball practice was just beginning on the gym floor below. It was pretty hilarious and a bit creepy seein college-aged guys sit up and watch the action going on below…our guys were pretty zoned out from the ride. I used some of the downtime before dinner to chat it up with Sunshine, who had ridden GUF with me two years ago and had done this Trans-Am route last year.

We hopped over to a UW Pi Kapp alum’s house right in town for an amazing Mexican dinner of tacos and some kickin guac (gotta love the guac). The team let loose (perhaps a little too loose) and had a great time.

I passed out pretty early after dinner one of those old-school blue gym mats…nice and comfy.
